A HISTORICAL LOOK BACK TO THE ORIGINS OF OUR SHOP THROUGH THE EYES OF RENOWNED MARYPORT ARTIST, HILARY WHITESIDE SWAN.
If you haven't been to our store for a while you may notice the appearance of a spectacular 5ft x 4ft canvas that's appeared on the wall of our waiting room area. This wonderful painting depicts three local, well loved businesses that originally stood on the site of our shop today. We commissioned Maryport artist Hilary Whiteside Swan to create the painting from various old black and white photographs.
The shops were built in 1929. The Tognarelli family traded in Workington for 120 years and had 3 cafes in the town with the Pow Street one just closing recently when the owners retired. Many of our customers have commented on how the painting captures perfectly the mood of the period, bringing back many memories of what characters some of the owners of the buisnesses were, and remembering relatives and friends who lived in the flats above. The added images of people stopping for a chat, going about their business, or just admiring the window displays gives you a feel of a bygone age and a much slower and more civilised pace of life.
Shop 1 has always been a clothes shop with Harold Clucas, Dixon’s and Civvy St.
